Now did I tell you my head hurts…
So I’m guessing that a few of you understand what a DOC is, but I’m certain that a lot of you don’t.
But that’s ok…
Many leading brands use an inferior DOC, or they don’t use one at all, opting to substitute it for a cheap petrol version. So what exactly is a DOC?
I’ve put together a small write up briefly explaining what a DOC is, and why we choose to use them here at Roo Systems, so keep reading…
First a little history…
Before catalytic converters were developed, waste gases made by a car engine blew straight down the exhaust tailpipe and into the atmosphere.
The development of humble car mufflers did the job of reducing engine noise but did very little in reducing overall emissions.
It wasn’t until post-WWII that we saw the introduction and development of a muffler that contained a catalyst designed to reduce exhaust pollutants.
But with the predominate choice of fuel being petroleum the majority of development was centred around controlling emissions from petroleum-based engines.
Now with modern diesels being at the forefront of vehicle technology, great effort has been invested in cleaning up these oil burners, and thus cementing them into our culture.
What is a DOC?
A diesel oxidation catalyst, or DOC, is a device that utilises a chemical process in order to break down pollutants from the exhaust gases of a diesel engine, turning them into less harmful components.
We are all familiar with this process in petrol vehicles which is performed by the catalytic converter.
Diesel oxidation catalysts are generally honeycomb-shaped configurations coated in a rare earth element or a precious metal.
Exhaust gases flow through the DOC, where the heat from the exhaust combined with metal coating chemically change the pollutants from carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water.
These results are great. With up to 70% decrease in emissions.
